The experience
Romania has a very special place in my heart. The location of my first assignment with The Times in 1991, I have returned time and time again – and am delighted to welcome you to join me on my final photographic workshop to this incredible part of the world.
This Romania photography workshop is a cultural and photographic experience to a land where every moment holds a story. Created for photographers of all abilities – from experienced photographers to enthusiastic newcomers, you cannot fail to find inspiration and profound connection in these timeless landscapes. Discover the beauty of Romania, its people and places as you build a portfolio of authentic images that tell the story of this remarkable country.
There is something captivating about Romania. This is not just another photography workshop, but an invitation to immerse yourself into a different culture and way of living. I have found myself repeatedly enchanted by the warmth of the Romanian people, whose days are shaped by the ways of nature; governed by the lunar cycle. There’s a beautiful simplicity to this – a connection to the natural world which roots humanity to the land and reminds us that we, too, are of nature.
You’ll see this for yourself as you stand in the cobblestone village of Viscri before sunrise, observing the changing light and emerging sounds as herdsmen gather their cattle. This daily ritual, set against a backdrop of historic, time-worn buildings, is a living portrait of culture etched into the wood and stone. The human narrative of this country is waiting to be told. You’ll come away with images of a way of life which is largely forgotten by the western world, and an experience of a culture which is so far removed from our own.
You’ll feel the warmth of fire at the blacksmiths workshop, and feel the pulse of the rhythmic hammering which shapes objects at the coppersmiths, whose craft is a centuries-old legacy. Standing amidst their vibrant, colourful world, you’ll discover their culture and hear the tales of their craft, inspiring you to create intimate, powerful portraits that preserve this ancient skill.
Our journey will take us to the majestic, dramatic vistas of Rimetea, a village cradled by mountains. As the light of the day softens, you’ll witness the last luminous rays of sun that paint the peaks in gold. And in the morning, a soft mist will envelop you as you seek out straw-roofed barns that appear as though plucked from a fairytale.
To ensure a truly personal and supportive experience, the group size is strictly limited. This allows more one to one time, dedicated feedback and personalised instruction – all without the frustration of waiting for others to get out of your frame.
And, of course, every detail is considered for your comfort. All dietary requirements are happily catered for, and while alcoholic drinks aren’t included, you’re welcome to bring your own.
I hope you’ll join me on what promises to be an unforgettable photographic experience – and my last workshop in Romania.
