The experience
They say that if you visit the unique Scottish island of Iona once, you’re destined to return three times. For me, this certainly rings true and I am delighted to invite you to my third and final photography workshop to Iona; an island brimming with creative possibility.
Choosing Easter 2026 for this workshop is no coincidence. Known as ‘the cradle of Christianity’, this sacred time holds profound significance on Iona, echoing centuries of spiritual journeys and renewal at the very heart of early Christianity in Scotland. I’ve chosen Easter not for religion though, but for rhythm. The island is waking, the light is soft and honest, and gentle colours emerge gradually from winters’ greys. The seasonal tension – between holding on and letting go – mirrors the creative process too closely to ignore.
An island accessible only by sea – and almost free from cars - Iona has a calming energy which embraces you the moment you step off the ferry. People come to Iona because it’s unchartered territory. Life moves at a different pace here; free from the distractions of daily life you’ll find that your sense of seeing becomes very finely attuned, as you begin to notice what you see and what you choose to photograph. In the island’s quiet calm, you’ll discover a deeper connection to your subject and your creative view, honing your photographic sensibilities as you explore your authentic style.
You’ll begin to celebrate what you enjoy seeing and photographing, enhancing your sense of identity as a photographer and building confidence in the way you see the world – rather than creating images which interpret what you believe others want to see. Imagine wandering the beaches, exploring hidden rock pools or following the winding tracks through the dunes – everywhere you look, a fascinating subject awaits. The subtle patterns left by the tide, the colours of sea glass, the delicate textures of faded, peeling paint. Beauty here is always within reach, offering up endless inspiration.
Beyond its famed Christian heritage, Iona is woven with a deep tapestry of human stories. Long before Columba arrived, people thrived on this island – their lives a testament to resilience and ingenuity. This unbroken thread of island living, coupled with a rich cultural legacy of illuminated manuscripts, intricate stone crosses and the works of artists like the Colorists ensures Iona remains a powerful source of inspiration for creatives today.
Our base for this workshop will be Columba Hotel, from which we can easily reach the stunning Iona Abbey, with its grand architectural details, intricate carving and ancient stones. Iona Nunnery is just five minutes from the hotel; a beautifully preserved 12th century Augustinian nunnery. Walk no more than 25 minutes to discover the stunning North End Beaches where the wild Atlantic meets the pristine shore - and perfect conditions for long exposure photography. The island’s varied landscape includes crofted land to moorland, bustling piers and expansive landscapes. The proximity means we can easily return to your favourite spots as the light changes, taking our time at each location rather than rushing a single visit. Take your time to absorb the spirit of the place and allow its quiet beauty to reveal itself through your lens.
To ensure a truly personal and supportive experience, the group size is strictly limited. This allows more one to one time, dedicated feedback and personalised instruction – all without the frustration of waiting for others to get out of your frame.
And, of course, every detail is considered for your comfort. All dietary requirements are happily catered for, and while alcoholic drinks aren’t included, you’re welcome to bring your own.
For centuries, Iona has been a place of pilgrimage, and now, you can begin your own photographic pilgrimage to this incredible place.
